Heat and Ice

It’s hot and getting hotter
chips of ice cooling my warm soda
condensation beads coalescing into streams
running down my favorite chipped orange-tinted drinking glass
creating warm pools of Rorschach patterns on my fifties diamond top dinette
foretelling action
stirring up troubling thoughts
it was not a day to be out in the heat
but there was no getting around what had to be done
spinning snake eyes and snake rattle weather vane
a talisman wheel of misfortune
pointing straight at me
“Courage, my friend,” the coyote whispered as he appeared and disappeared in my mind’s eye
the price of silver going up and up
clock ticking, shadows lengthening
slothful lizard tongues snapping
I take the first few steps
fast-moving clouds pass above
I’m coming
taking matters into my own hands
visible in your rearview window
